Get a mutt from a shelter that is mixed with large breeds. The mutt word sounds negative, but the hybrid vigor (or heterosis) is absolutely a great thing. Think about it, most breeds of dog had lots of inbreeding. The inbreeding in humans can lead to pretty bad stuff, it's the same thing for animals. A mixed breed dog is likely to live longer and healthier than purebred. And for a very big plus, you will save a life.
